Unfortunately, much infant care these days involves activities that limit the rich, close-up, sensory-motor experiences needed for optimal development.  These activities include spending long periods of time in car seats, baby swings, strollers, and “bouncy” chairs.  Infant care requires careful development in multiple areas which will be discussed in this multi-part blog series.

 

Let’s LEARN about

Cognitive Development

You know that Cognitive development includes learning numbers, colors and telling time.

But what does it mean for an infant?

 

Did you know that…

Before infants are born they are already developing memories?

Repetition of stories, games, and activities allow babies to exercise their memories?

The only thing babies like better than repetition is disruption of a routine?

Babies can follow both visual and auditory patterns?

 

So what can you do in the classroom to help infants reach their full cognitive potential?

Let’s learn what you can do in the classroom.

 

In the room it is important to find opportunities to build on what the infants already know and the skills they already have!

Did you know that…

The “Back to sleep” campaign saved lives?

The “Back to sleep” campaign has had some negative effects on infant development?

Babies should be placed on their tummies 2 to 3 times a day for about 3 to 5 minutes at a time?

Tummy time can be fun?

 

Like the other forms of development we have discussed, an infant’s physical development is largely based on the experiences provided.

Therefore, it is important to give infants the opportunity to practice moving and exploring, especially providing time on their tummies.

So what can you do in the classroom to help infants reach their full physical potential?
